M.S. Dhoni Review: Get Inspired, Get Tears in Your Eyes

M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story is biographical Hindi movie directed by Neeraj Pandey, who is quite know for making films like ‘A Wednesday’, ‘Special 26’ and ‘Baby’. And this time, the writer-director has yet again hit a six by making a true biopic and a true tribute to the man who is being loved by everyone, who is still inspiring many in many ways, who has taken the spirit of cricket in an altogether different level, and to the man who is a living legend in his own ways.

Yes, the movie follows the real-life journey of Mahendra Singh Dhoni – who was a middle-class boy working as ticket collector in railway station along with a budding cricketer from Ranchi into becoming something as the most successful captain of Indian Cricket Team.

The movie had big expectations, especially among Dhoni’s fans. And I believe Neeraj Pandey just nailed it! Earlier Dhoni was believed to be on the negative side in front of his cricketer colleagues, cricket board and cricket fans, but the writer-directer has perfectly showcased Dhoni’s inner vision towards cricket and love for the country. He had beautifully sketched out Dhoni’s positive qualities like super-cool attitude, focus, drive and steadfastness. And with respect to that how he took Indian Cricket Team to another level, made India proud by winning several matches along with the historic World Cup in 2015.

Well, not only that, Pandey has also highlighted the struggle days of Dhoni as to how he was working as ticket collector for his family and side-by-side practicing for cricket without looking time for his passion. ‘’ also shows how Dhoni’s father always wanted nothing but a normal life for his son along with a job security, a bunch of friends who for all the time had Dhoni’s back in his dreams and passion towards cricket, and an ever-supporting sister who just supports Dhoni no matter what it would be his decision.

m-s-dhoni-the-untold-story-posterThe movie as well shows Dhoni’s personal life as how he was attached with his ex-girlfriend Priyanka Jha and how he got connected with the love of his life (now turned as beloved wife – Sakshi Dhoni). It shows the glimpse of Dhoni’s emotional side and how it got affected in his personal as well as professional life. In a nutshell, a life that is anything but extraordinary in its extreme ordinariness.

Well no matter the film has typical romantic songs and Dhoni romancing the actress here, as after all it’s a Bollywood movie and not a documentary movie. Some may also call as hagiography in place of biography, but I would believe it’s just because of over-expectations from the celluloid version of cricketing icon. I believe it’s fair enough to showcase Dhoni’s whole personal as well professional life in an inspiring way by the makers that can fit in just three-short hours.

The film’s screenplay is exceptionally well-crafted, which keeps the audience engaged right till the end. The film inspires you in many ways, and also will make you cry and have you in tears if you get involved and feel the essence of this biopic. I cried in the movie, and in fact have seen many in theatre who consider as a fan of Dhoni.

The film’s protagonist Sushant Singh Rajput cleverly enacted the role of the living-legend Dhoni, wherein I believe no one would have ever played the character so efficiently – especially those shots, tone of language and dialogue delivery. A super-hats-off to the actor for portraying Dhoni so magically that it moved his fans! Disha Patani as Dhoni’s ex-girlfriend makes a noticeable debut with this movie. Kiara Advani as Dhoni’s wife Sakshi is decent and Bhumika Chawla as Dhoni’s sister makes a good comeback with this film. Anupam Kher exceptionally plays his part as Dhoni’s father, and so does Rajesh Sharma as Dhoni’s quirky coach.

So is it a paisa-vasool film? Definitely! It will be loved by his fans, where the trade experts will simply say “Mahi maar raha hai – Mahi maar raha hai” at the box-office! Watch it for Dhoni – Watch it to Cry – Watch it to get Inspired!
